The Old Stagers

The Harris family had a long standing connection with The Old Stagers, with the 4th and 5th Lords being regular participants in many productions.

The Old Stagers were founded in 1842 by the Earl of Bessborough to perform during Kent’s annual Canterbury Cricket Week.  It is the oldest amateur dramatic company in the world, and has given performances every year in Canterbury, with few exceptions.

Old Stagers members have included famous figures from sport, politics and the law. The Harris family were heavily involved in Cricket Week with the 4th Lord Harris holding the Kent captaincy for 14yrs until 1889.

At Belmont, we have photograph albums which show the whole family taking part in Old Stagers productions.

This year’s production is “The Visit” by Friedrich Dürrenmatt
Tuesday 29th July – Saturday 2nd August 2025, at the Malthouse Theatre, Canterbury.

Gullen is a dump. This once prosperous town is crushed by poverty. But the one hope of salvation is extraordinary billionaire philanthropist Claire Zachanassian who lived in the town until she was 17. Will she turn up for her first visit in 40 years? If she does, will she help them? And if she will, are there to be any strings attached?
